13 Simple Self-Help Ideas for Dealing with Stress #stress #anxiety #parenting #busymoms #choosehappy

Stress invades people’s lives all the time, even daily for some.

Life gets hard and it’s difficult to juggle all the things life throws at us.

But there are some simple every day ways to relieve stress daily and ways to deal with anxiety.

Daily Methods for Relieving Stress

Constant stress can lead to physical problems and mental health issues, but there are several easy ways to manage your stress and even prevent it in the first place.

Begin using these methods to avoid feeling overwhelmed by the stressful events that occur in your life.

It’s important that we get our stress levels under control because frequent elevated levels of stress are toxic to the human body and can cause heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, and diabetes.

It’s easier than you may think to help yourself decrease your stress levels.

Just follow these simple steps to relieve stress:

1. Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine.

Caffeine and nicotine are stimulants and do not decrease your levels of stress; they increase them.

Alcohol is a depressant in large amounts and a stimulant in small amounts, making it bad for you to take as a way of relieving stress.

Instead of reaching towards the alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine, grab some water or herbal tea.

These are hydrating and provide you with stress relief.

2. Engage in physical activity.

Not only can exercise maintain your weight, but it can also help to relieve your stress.

Rather than taking medications to reduce your anxiousness, find a physical activity that you enjoy

Experts recommend exercising at least three times a week, but if you want to eliminate the stress from work or school, then find a physical activity such as bicycling or jogging that you can enjoy each day.

Stress releases hormones in your body known as adrenaline and cortisol and releasing some of these hormones can help your stress levels to go down.

3. Get more sleep.

Not getting enough sleep is a direct correlation to high stress levels.

However, stress sometimes prevents us from relaxing enough to fall asleep.

If you are having this issue, try taking a warm bath or reading before bedtime.

Another good tip is going to bed at roughly the same time every night.

This creates a routine for you to follow, naturally decreasing your stress.

4. Try relaxation techniques.

Every week, try a different stress-reducing relaxation technique.

You can try self-hypnosis as this is very simple and easy to do anywhere.

You could also attempt saying one word repeatedly to yourself that holds meaning for you.

Don’t worry if these relaxation tips don’t work right off the bat.

Relaxation is a skill that takes time to master.

5. Talk to someone you trust and who can help.

Letting someone know how you feel is a great way to reduce your stress.

Many people have said that it’s like a weight being lifted off their shoulders.

Stress can cloud our mind and prevent us from thinking clearly.

Talking through your situation with someone can help you figure out a solution to what you’re stressing about.

6. Keep a stress diary.

Keeping a diary and writing down your thoughts and emotions will help you become more aware of what you’re feeling.

Write down the date and place the stressful event occurred.

Also include what you were doing and how you felt, both emotionally and physically.

Writing everything down will enable you to avoid another stressful situation and you’ll discover some new coping mechanisms.

7. Manage your time.

Many people experience stress when they run out of time to do important things, and none more so than a busy working mum!

With a schedule to follow you can ensure that you get all of your important tasks done in a timely manner.

Having all your work done on time will help to decrease some stress.

8. Learn to say “No”.

It’s easy to believe that you have all the time in the world and can juggle one more thing in your life.

But sometimes you need to remember that you have so many other important things that need to be juggled.

There’s only a certain amount of hours in a day, making it hard to get multiple things done.

Say no to what doesn't matter to make time for what does: your family and yourself.

9. Learn specialized breathing techniques.

If you are having a stressful day, then you can practice specialized breathing techniques anywhere to eliminate your anxious thoughts.

One of the breathing techniques that you will find useful is taking a deep breath to fill your lungs and releasing the air slowly as you count to 20.

While you are performing this breathing technique, you will notice that your blood pressure declines and your racing thoughts stop.

10. Socialize with family and friends.

By socializing each day, you can reduce your stress levels.

You might think that the 'doing nothing' time spent with your friends and family is wasted, but it is important for your brain and body.

When you are socializing, your brain releases serotonin to improve your overall mood, and when you have a happier mood, your stress is reduced.

11. Expose your skin to sunlight.

If you are inside a building all of the time, then you aren’t getting enough sunlight exposure.

Scientists recommend exposing your skin to sunlight for 20 minutes each day to increase your body’s vitamin D levels.

With more vitamin D in your body, you are able to cope with stress along with having additional physical energy and mental alertness.

12. Increase your mindfulness with meditation.

With daily meditation, you can increase your mindfulness.

Today, many of us aren’t living in the moment because we are thinking about yesterday or tomorrow instead.

When you practice meditation each day, it helps you to focus on today by clearing the troubling thoughts from your mind.

13. Maintain a healthy diet each day.

When you consume a healthy diet, it is easier to cope with feelings of stress.

A nutritious diet includes a lot of fruits and vegetables along with whole-grain foods, dairy products and lean protein.

You should avoid eating sugar or refined flour, and it is also a good idea to moderate your consumption of caffeine.

In addition, drink several glasses of water each day to remain hydrated.

Stress invades everyone’s lives but dealing with stress is manageable.

Know that everything will get better and the thing that’s causing you so much stress won’t be a worry to you down the road.
