All around the world, people are recuperating from a long holiday season.
Many homeschool families, even the ones who homeschool year-round, take time off in December for rest, relaxation, and celebrating.
But after so many weeks of vacation time, it can be kind of difficult to jump back into the swing of
things with work and homeschool.
Read on for our tips on how to get back into the homeschool groove after the holidays.
A lot of people view the beginning of a new year with all kinds of hope, excitement, and big plans . .. and they’re able to jump right in with full force.
Others, however [hands up!], struggle a bit with the new year . . . especially with getting back into the
groove of things after being in holiday mode for so long.
If you find yourself in that latter group, know that you’re not alone.
After a long vacation or break from homeschooling it can be a real struggle to get back into the normal routine of daily homeschool.
If you're struggling with post-holiday homeschooling, here are 5 tips.
Even years into our homeschool journey, I still don’t find it super easy to go from holiday mode right back into homeschool mode.
So, I wanted to take a few minutes to share some tips with you that have helped me ease back into homeschooling after a vacation.
I hope they help you as well!
Just remember, most of all, give yourself - and your kids - grace.
How to Get Back Into the Homeschool Groove After the Holidays
1. Start off with easy days
There’s no rule saying you have to jump back into your pre-holiday routine with full force as soon as the holidays are over.
You’re perfectly within your rights to ease back into it with some easy, more relaxed days.
Hey, even maybe an easy week!
Choose some fun activities to get things started and let things flow from there, or just add in one new subject each day for a week or two.
2. Make it a family affair
Instead of stressing yourself out over how to get the family back in the saddle, have a family meeting where you decide, as a team, how you want this new semester to look and feel.
It will likely be a much smoother process if everyone has had some input into what’s going to happen.
3. Be flexible
Getting back into the routine of ANYTHING after an extended period can be rough and you’re bound to have some shaky moments.
Expect for things to be a bit wonky by allowing a lot of wiggle room.
Focus on having fun and learning interesting things.
Everything else is secondary.
And remember to give everyone (including yourself) some grace if things don’t go as planned.
4. Go on a field trip
I don’t know about you, but field trip days were always some of my favourite days back when I was in school.
Plan a couple of field trips you know your kids will enjoy.
Not only can a field trip get your kids excited about learning, it can also be a great way to counter the winter blues that the short winter days can bring.
Bonus points if you let your kids choose or get involved in planning the field trips!
5. Integrate educational games
One of my favourite ways to get my kids excited about learning is to play games that make learning fun.
Here are a few fun games we love in our home:
Introducing a new topic using a board game, or playing them just becaause, is the perfect way to get homeschool going again!
I hope that this helps you and your family ease your way back into your homeschooling days in a way that feels peaceful and enjoyable!
