The holidays - and the run up to them - are often a rush of activity and, as you well know, it can be really stressful!
If you're wondering how to keep homeschooling going at this busy time of year, read on...
Trying to keep your homeschool going as planned during December can be a real challenge!
Do you keep going as normal or switch to a lighter load?
Do you need a Christmas curriculum?
Maybe you're feeling guilty because you just want to slow down or even - whisper - not homeschool at all right now.
Wherever you are, whatever you're doing, don't feel bad mama!
As you know in your heart of hearts, you cannot stop them learning!
Whether you continue with your regular curriculum, switch to a Christmas curriculum or just cut back and do less, your kids will be learning all the time.
There's the life skills of decluttering the house and putting up the decorations; planning a menu and Christmas shopping lists; organising the family diary and the logistics of getting everyone to the right places at the right times.
Get your kids involved in all that. Hone their maths with working to a budget or their geography skills with some route planning.
You really can navigate homeschooling up to and through the holiday season.

How to Keep Homeschool Going in the Weeks Before Christmas
Whatever your hopes and epectations, homeschooling during the holidays can be stressful!
Like all of you, the holiday season is always super busy for me and my family.
Between making plans, putting up festive decorations, making and shopping for gifts (not to mention all the usual stuff we mamas do on a daily basis), December is always chock full of activity.
And, let’s be honest, Christmas can all be a little (or a lot) stressful!
So, it doesn’t surprise me that so many people struggle to continue homeschooling through the run up to the holidays.
If that’s you, I hope that by the time you finish reading this article, you will feel a bit of that pressure lifted off your shoulders.
If you're struggling to homeschool during the holiday season, here are 3 tips to help you out...
3 Tips for Homeschooling Through the Holiday Season
1. Incorporate Holiday Unit Studies
There’s a reason unit studies are so popular (and it’s not just because people love a good theme).
Unit studies make it easy for you to teach multiple ages/grades at once . . . and you can usually implement multiple subjects in the process.
Plus it’s a fun way to see how deep you can dive into a topic.
Grab one of our pre-planned unit studies or one of these unit study outlines to make your own.
At this time of year you could explore all kinds of topics, such as:
- How People Celebrate Winter Around the World
- Holiday Traditions from Around the World
- Winter Solstice
- Winter Nature Study
- Classic Christmas Movies
- Classic Christmas Literature
2. Make Learning Festive
Why not use the holiday season as a chance to take the fun up a notch with Christmas-themed activities, games, or Christmas arts and crafts projects?
There’s no shortage of ideas you can pick and choose from - and they don’t even have to cost you a lot of time, energy, or money!
Want some ready-made activities? Grab this HUGE bundle of over 25 printables including activity pages, coloring pages, word search, game, scavenger hunt and more!
More than 90 pages of fun and there's even a Santa letter, Santa bucks and LOTS more!
There are also so many fun things you can do at home with just a few things you already have.
For example, you could:
- Create your own holiday-themed board game (maths, logic, arts and crafts)
- Make up your own holiday dessert (cooking, art, science, maths)
- Do some Christmas baking to share with family and friends (maths, science)
- Paint a holiday mural or canvas as a family (art)
- Plan and go shopping for Christmas gifts or food (money management)
- Make Christmas gifts together (art, science, maths)
- Write a holiday story together (literature and maybe even art if it’s illustrated)
3. Take Things Slow
At the end of the day, remember that you’re in charge of your homeschool.
So if you feel like what your family needs right now is to slow things down, scale things back, or even take a full-on break from homeschooling then do it!
That’s the beauty of homeschooling.
You have the freedom and flexibility to let things flow at a pace that feels natural and good, not frantic and stressful.
Think about what you and your family need in this busy season and let that be your guide.
I hope these tips will help you and your family make the most of this holiday season, in all the ways that REALLY matter!
