Building Your Own Shed: 4 Tips for Success

There’s a lot of value in adding a shed to your garden.

In fact, once you’ve done so, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without one.

It’ll become a home for your garden furniture and gardening tools, and you’ll also find that it provides a handy storage solution for other items you don’t need on a daily basis, such as Christmas decorations.

While you can very much choose to buy a shed if you like, you don’t necessarily have to.

Though it might sound like a big project, you can actually build your own shed. It’s not as difficult as you might think!

If you have any woodwork experience, or you’re willing to learn, then it’s a realistic ambition.

We’ve put together a few tips that’ll put you on the right track toward success below.

1. Plan It Out

If you fail to prepare, then you should prepare to fail. That old school-worthy motto is highly applicable to the shed-building process.

The quality of the final product will be determined in large part by the design of the shed, so make sure to get this part right!

If you have design skills, then you can design the shed yourself, but if not, there are plenty of free designs online that you can use.

You’ll just need to know the dimensions of the shed you’re looking to build.

If it’s your first time doing this kind of project, then select a simple design — it’ll make things much easier!

2. Grab Your Supplies

One of the advantages of building a shed is that you really don’t need that many supplies.

Once you’ve got your wood, roof, flooring, siding, and fasteners, you’re pretty ready to go.

One easily overlooked component, however, is the importance of having a solid foundation for your shed.

There are plastic shed bases that are easy to construct that will ensure your shed is fully stable once it’s up.

It’s best to get your shed base before you get to work on constructing your shed.

3. Get To Work

OK, and now the fun part — actually building your shed!

If you’ve got a simple, easy to follow design, then you’ll likely find that it’s more straightforward than you might think.

With that said, it’s still easy to run into issues, so look at working with a friend if you can.

If they have some experience with this type of work, then that’ll be all the better!

4. Don’t Forget to Waterproof Your Shed

You’ll be proud once your shed is standing tall — but remember that you’ll need to ensure that it stays that way, too.

If you’re in the UK, then it’s likely that your shed will be subject to a lot of rainfall during the course of its lifetime (or even within the first few weeks!)

As such, it’s important to waterproof your shed so that it can withstand water damage.

There are a bunch of ways to waterproof a shed, but the best way is to apply a waterproofing treatment, most of which offer complete protection after a couple of hours.
