How Feng Shui Can Help You Sleep

Feng Shui may have been banned in China during the Cultural Revolution, but the ancient practice has now been embraced by modern culture.  If you’re wondering whether Feng Shui could improve the quality of your sleep, take a look at how and why here.

What is Feng Shui?

Feng Shui originated in China some 3,500 years ago, and is defined as a philosophical system of harmonising with the surrounding environment.

The ancient practice encourages living in harmony with nature, and believes that an invisible force binds together the universe, earth and humanity.

How to Feng Shui Your Bedroom

1. Limit technology

Technology may be an integral aspect of our daily lives, but if you’re hoping to align your bedroom with the practices of Feng Shui, then it may be time to rid yourself of its influence.

Computers, televisions and any other large electrical equipment encourages EMF pollution, and will ultimately upset the energy in your room.

EMF is essentially manmade electromagnetic radiation that brings the negative connotations of work into what is meant to be an area of relaxation.

2. Keep the windows open

Feng Shui is all about the natural flow of energy, and a stuffy room is unlikely to encourage the practice.

Open up your windows in order to encourage mindfulness, and enjoy the freshness that the natural air brings.

Come winter, if you’re not quite as keen to keep the windows open all day, invest in some essential oils that can also have the same effect. However, try to stay away from fragrance oils as these can often prove unnatural and sometimes toxic.

3. Style your bed

It can be easy to believe that Feng Shui is a complicated process, but in actual fact, it’s pretty straightforward.

In terms of your bed, all you need are a few adjustments. To begin with, make sure it’s accessible from both sides, and for optimum balance, place two small bedside tables at either end.

Finally, the bed shouldn’t be directly in line with the door as it could cause chi energy to rush over you as you sleep.

4. Think about colour

When practicing Feng Shui, the colour scheme should reflect the best flow of energy for restorative sleep.

This may sound a little complicated, but in fact all you need to keep in mind is whether the colour can qualify as a ‘skin colour’.

Skin colours encourage natural energies and enhance the space around you, all the while improving your mindfulness.

Can Feng Shui Help You Sleep?

Feng Shui is commonly understood to be about finding your optimum oneness.

What this equates to is being at peace with your surroundings, and feeling a sense of serenity as you attempt to sleep.

While scientifically speaking there is nothing that will actively force you to rest, the removal of clutter, technological distractions and the encouragement of positive energy can help.

In my opinion, if you find yourself wondering what you can do to improve your sleep, then it’s worth mapping your bedroom with Feng Shui.
